Most individuals with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) (Carruthers et al., 2003 Carruthers, B. M., Jain, A. K., DeMeirleir, K. L., Peterson, D. L., & Klimas, N. G., Lerner, A. M., … van de Sande, M. (2003). Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: Clinical working case definition, diagnostic and treatments protocols. Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 11, 7115.[Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar]), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) (Carruthers et al., 2011 Carruthers, B. M., van de Sande, M. I., De Meirleir, K. L., Klimas, N. G., Broderick, G., Mitchell, T., … Stevens, S. (2011). Myalgic encephalomyelitis: International Consensus Criteria. Journal of Internal Medicine, 270, 327338.[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) (Fukuda et al., 1994 Fukuda, K., Straus, S. E., Hickie, I., Sharpe, M. C., Dobbins, J. G., & Komaroff, A. (1994). The chronic fatigue syndrome: A comprehensive approach to its definition and study. Annals of Internal Medicine, 121, 953959. Retrieved from http://www.ncf-net.org/patents/pdf/Fukuda_Definition.pdf[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) indicate that they experience fatigue and sharp decreases in energy levels, which hinder the ability to engage in physical activities (Friedberg & Jason, 1998 Friedberg, F., & Jason, L. (1998). Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: An empirical guide to assessment and treatment. Washington DC: American Psychological Association.[Crossref] [Google Scholar]). However, there are some individuals who reduce activity engagement in order to avoid a worsening of symptoms; thus these individuals may endorse lower levels of fatigue. Accordingly, those with low levels of fatigue but low endurance/stamina might be inadvertently excluded from some criteria based on the fatigue requirement. The current study serves as an exploration of the relationship between fatigue and stamina and the effects of these constructs on illness symptomology and their implications for assessment and diagnosis.
