Grant Writing

Linking the Social Work Program with the Community

Pages 83-97
Published online: 05 Nov 2010

Social work has an uneven commitment to community practice. As a result, there are very few educational tools for students to learn about interventions with that target system. This paper discusses the use of a grant writing assignment in the context of course content on communities and organizations that accomplished several important educational objectives, including: (a) linking the social work program to community agencies beyond practicums; (b) requiring students to become knowledgeable about the community and its human service delivery system; (c) teaching students a useful technical skill; and (d) reinforcing the generalist nature of social work practice processes.
