The Continent Ileostomy in the Pediatric Patient

Definitive surgery for ulcerative colitis always involves removal of the target organ and construction of some sort of ileostomy. With the development of the continent intra-abdominal ileal pouch, which eliminates the need of an appliance, this reconstruction appears to be the preferred one for most patients—including children who are reliable enough and mature enough to care for their ileostomy.
