Summary

It is the objective of this article to describe the features and applications of the LigaSure™ vessel sealing system and the new laparoscopic LigaSure Atlas™ instrument with both vessel sealing and tissue dividing capabilities. This new technique works by fusing the collagen and elastine in vessel walls to create a permanent seal. The fusion mechanism results in strong burst strength characteristics as compared to standard bipolar and ultrasonic coagulating instruments. This new energy-based source continually monitors the clinical effect on the tissue and provides greater tissue sealing with minimal damage to surrounding tissue. Studies have shown that the automated LigaSure™ device is safe, efficient, and easy to use and reduces intraoperative blood loss and operative time in many surgical procedures.
