Published online: 14 Aug 2009

Many women who participate in training for childbirth fail to show clear benefits. For many of those who do benefit, the outcomes have not been as they expected. There has been little evidence of concern with the limitations on outcomes from psychoprophylactic training. However, there are several significant changes that can be made to reduce the limitations of childbirth training and allow maximized effects. These changes include better selection and preparation of instructors, greater individualization of training, and greater flexibility and responsiveness to individual needs, expectations, motivations, and abilities.
