Modernity and the process of state formation: An examination of 20th century Africa

Our understanding of the intricacies of international relations is enhanced by different forms of contextual knowledge, both spatial and temporal. In this article, we explore the complexities of the process of state formation, drawing upon the work of Charles Tilly as a template. We apply these ideas, developed in Western Europe, to the process of state formation in modern Africa, with some success. We explore these results for general insights.
