Use of a ‘decision tree’ to assess and treat

“I couldn't sleep last night” is an often-heard comment. Such transient insomnia, often the result of stress or overstimulation, usually cures itself. However, long-term insomnia can impair daytime function and requires treatment. The authors provide a “decision tree” for assessing possible causes and offer recommendations for good sleep hygiene and stimulus control. They also review behavioral and pharmacologic therapy and indicate when each is appropriate.
