Cognitive Map Formation as a Tool for Facilitating Information Transfer in Interpretive Programming

Pages 232-242
Published online: 13 Feb 2018

ABSTRACT

Using mail questionnaires, first-time visitors to Gettysburg National Military Park were asked to rate the perceived clarity of Gettysburg Battle events. Perceived clarity was found to be related not only to the nature of interpretive programs visited, but also to the order in which they were visited. The data yield possible support to a hypothesis derived from spatial cognition literature. The hypothesis is that early cognitive map formation facilitates information transfer during interpretive experiences.
