Abstract

Silica gel impregnated with iron(III) salts functions as a humidity indicator, turning from a deep amber color when dry, to nearly colorless when humidified. The mechanism is proposed as being the result of the formation of species with Fe-OH-Si bridges. These are thought to be highly colored when dry buy dissociate into pale colored monomeric iron(III) species when exposed to moisture.
