Abstract

A simple, selective and cost-effective method for the reduction of nitroarenes to arylamines within 20–40 min is described. Azoarenes, both symmetrical and unsymmetrical, give arylamines on reaction with lead metal powder and ammonium bromide in refluxing methanol, in high yields. The rate of the reaction of azoarenes is greatly accelerated on irradiation at 35 kHz in a sonic bath maintained at 25°C.
