During the last two decades research on the history of European household structure (based on yearly census records, fiscal documents etc) has revealed that average household size was only 4–5 persons and that the so-called extended family, i. e. households with more than two generations present, can only be found in 10–20 per cent of cases. The typical household contained only the head, his wife and unmarried children and perhaps some servants.
