Martin Woollacott is a former Guardian foreign correspondent and foreign editor, who still contributes to that paper. He has covered numerous major news stories, principally in Asia and the Middle East, including the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1975, the Bangladesh War, the Indian Emergency and the 1991 Gulf War. He reported on the Iranian Revolution in 1978 and 1979 and returned to Iran several times in the 1980s and 1990s. He is the author of After Suez: Adrift in the American Century (London: I. B. Tauris, 2006).
