Bill Norton, the author of much of this report, was educated at Winchester and Magdalene College Cambridge (with national service in Germany). He spent some years with the Diplomatic Service, partly in the Middle East, before moving to the Treasury. He is a member of the Alpine Club and Chatham House, and has held two art exhibitions in London. He is an Hon. Secretary of the Society.
Richard Lewington, who recorded the experiences of the riders expedition, has been British Ambassador in Ecuador for the last three years. He is the Hon. Sec. of the Society in Ecuador. He has spent ten years in Central Asia, having served in Mongolia in the early Seventies and recently as Ambassador in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. He has been in the Diplomatic Service for some 34 years.
